COMSO to intensify agitation for implementation of ILP

SHILLONG, Feb 21: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (COMSO) has expressed its disappointment over the stand of the Centre on the resolution passed by the Meghalaya Assembly to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state even as it said that it will intensify its agitation to force the government of India to enact it.

“This is no good news for the people of the state. We had expected that the centre will implement ILP in Meghalaya,” COMSO chairman, Robertjune Kharjahrin said after an emergency meeting on Friday.

It may be mentioned that on Thursday evening during a meeting between a delegation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the latter assured to examine the resolution passed by the Meghalaya Assembly for the implementation of ILP in the State.

The COMSO chairman said that there is nothing to examine about the ILP even as he added that the law was in force during the British regime and present in operation in four states.

Kharjahrin informed that during the emergency meeting, a decision was also to taken to make the movement to implement ILP in Meghalaya, stronger.

“We have decided to seek the opinions of all stakeholders in the state on how to go forward to make this a mass movement to put pressure on the government of India to implement ILP in our state,” the COMSO chairman said.

The COMSO has also decided to continue with its ‘direct action” agitation by checking movement of people along the inter-state and international boundary with Assam and Bangladesh respectively.

According to Kharjahrin in the earlier phase, the members of the COMSO was checking movement of people along with the directorate of infiltration only in the border areas but this time they will work together with the district task force.

“We will be checking documents in places where we suspect illegal foreigner resides,” the COMSO chairman said.
