Congress confident Martin Danggo won’t leave the party

SHILLONG, Jun 13: The Congress on Wednesday was confident that its legislator from Ranikor, Martin M Danggo would stick with the party that he has been associated for long.

It may be mentioned that on Tuesday, soon after Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Kongkal Sangma announced that hat Ranikor would be upgraded to a civil sub-division Danggo said he would resign from the party and the MLA’s post on the day of its inauguration.

However, Congress spokesperson Zenith M Sangma despite the public announcement made by the Ranikor legislator claimed that all the 21 Congress MLAs are intact.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhavan, Sangma said, “In politics nothing is final. We trust all the MLAs of the party.”

The Congress spokesperson also said that there was certain agenda which has led to the turn of events. Sangma however refused to spell out what was the agenda.

“Being a matured and seasonal politician, he will not take any wrong decisions,” the Congress spokesperson added.

Despite Danggo making a statement that he will resign from the post of MLA and the party when the Ranikor Civil-Sub Division is inaugurated, the Congress party will not serve any show cause notice to him immediately.

“As of now, we are not going to issue any show cause notice to Danggo,” Sangma said.

The spokesperson also reiterated his confidence on the Ranikor legislator not leaving the party even as he added that the Congress will not be affected by this development.

When quipped if this development in the Congress has again raised question marks over Dr Mukul Sangma’s leadership, he said that the leadership is not claimed by any individual.

Sangma said that if any member is discontented with the issue of leadership one is free to raise this issue in the CLP.

“They can even take up the issue with the AICC. There is a system in place. Just talking in the corner or gossiping is not going to help. This kind of issue has to be taken in the right forum,” Sangma said.

On claims made by certain quarters that Danggo has decided to leave the Congress for the NPP because the previous Congress Government did not pay heed to his request to create a Civil Sub-Division at Ranikor, Sangma said that the petition for creation of the Civil Sub-Division was submitted only to the present Government.

Admitting that Ranikor in the past was neglected Sangma however pointed out that the Congress Government in recent past has carried out enough developmental works.

“For instance in 2012, a difficult area of South West Khasi Hills was given a new district. It is one of the biggest contributions to this region. Subsequently a full fledged police station and one administrative unit was created by the previous Congress led Government on the request made by the local sitting MLA,” the Congress spokesperson said.

Sangma also pointed out that during 2017-2018, the road infrastructure from Baghmara to Ranikor which is around 138 km was sanctioned under SARDP-NE even though the tender could not be called due to delay in land acquisition.
