SHILLONG, Jun 18: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) now has only one opposition member after four Congress members joined the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) on Monday.
On Monday, the four Congress, MDCs consisting of Kimfa S Marbaniang, MLA/MDC, Rambrai Jyrngam, Donevan Wanlang, MDC of Sohra, Lamphrang Blah, MDC of Mawphlang–Diengiei and Process T Sawkmie, MLA/MDC of Mawlai Constituency met Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pynshngaiñ N Syiem and submitted a letter of support to him.
The lone MDC who is in the opposition is, KHNAM, MDC/MLA, Adelbert Nongrum.
It may be mentioned that out of the 30 members in the KHADC there are 29 elected members while the seat of the nominated member is lying vacant.
Now with the Congress pledging its support to the ruling alliance in the KHADC the coalition consists of members from PDF, Congress, UDP, NPP, HSPDP and an independent MDC.
KHADC, chief Syiem while speaking to reporters said, “As an MDC and leader of the PDA there are various issues confronting us and which needs our immediate attention like the encroachments of the MUDA into the Sixth Scheduled Areas, relocation of the residents from Sweeper’s Colony, and the VAB,”
“As a leader I welcome the Congress MDCs and soon we will be convening a meeting of the PDA…when the alliance now has 28 members out of 29 MDCs”, he added.
Syiem also urged upon the lone opposition Adelbert Nongrum to join the ruling coalition in the KHADC.
“I urge Adelbert Nongrum to join us and strengthen the coalition so that important matters can be taken up collectively,” Syiem added.
