Conrad: Govt pushing with sport infra

SHILLONG, Oct 25: Meghalaya Chief Minister, who is also the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) President, said that his government is pushing forward with the construction of sporting infrastructures in the state by taking advantage of the 2022 National Games which will be held in the state.

Conrad was speaking at a function during the foundation stone laying ceremony for the indoor gymnasium at the Polo Cricket Ground, Shillong which will be built at a cost of Rs 5.35 crore and funded by the BCCI.

The Chief Minister said that the government is planning to build the games village in such a way that it has a legacy.

“The infrastructures will be used for other activities after the National Games is over,” the Chief Minister said. “Cricket will be part of this legacy plan also,” he added.

According to him the state government will allott land to build a cricket stadium near the site of the National Games stadium. He hoped that in future the proposed stadium will be able to host not only domestic matches but also IPL matches.

Conrad also appealed to the BCCI to fund the construction of the stadium.

Meanwhile, BCCI, Technical Committee, Chairman Sourav Ganguly who was also present at the function urged the young cricketers present at the function to keep playing and a time will come when their talent will be recognized. Giving the example of former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ganguly said, “From the East no one expected MS Dhoni from Ranchi to be captain of India for nearly 300 games, so when all of you pick up the bat and play for different levels, your aim should be to be one of him.”

He also said that in the northeast there is an enormous amount of talent and it is just the exposure that is required.
