Conrad Sangma claims that push for inclusion of Khasi and Garo language in 8th Schedule gathered steam after MDA came to power

Shillong, Mar 18: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that it was only after the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) came to power in 2018 that the push for inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution gathered steam.

Sangma said that the State Assembly on November 27, 2018 passed a resolution to urge the centre to include Khasi and Garo in the Eight Schedule of the constitution.

“Till 2016 Garo language was not in the list of the Ministry of Home Affairs but after the Resolution passed by the Meghalaya Assembly Garo was included,” Sangma said while taking part in a resolution to streamline the usage of literature and grammar considering the linguistic variation that exist in Meghalaya to promote, preserve and sustain the usage of Khasi and Garo languages.

According to the Chief Minister, even the previous governments including the present one led by the BJP in the centre are working on giving recognition of the various demands by various communities.

“If included this will give strong message of integration,” Sangma said.

Earlier, moving the resolution, Congress legislator from Umroi, stated that after the State government sent the resolution to government of India for inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th schedule of the constitution it becomes more important to prepare so that one can embrace the challenges of linguistic variations, grammatical usages, spellings and lexicons that are prevalent in the Khasi and Garo languages.

Lyngdoh said that variation in spellings of certain Khasi words has created confusion for literati, authors and students and common folks.

Meanwhile, East Shillong legislator, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that extensive exercises were taken in the past for inclusion of Khasi languages in the Eight Schedule by various committees.

“This culminated in the preparation of a kind of dossier that was sent to the government of India for it’s consideration to include Khasi in the Eight Schedule.

Lyngdoh suggested to the government that similar exercise should be carried out for Garo language.
