Conrad Sangma wins South Tura by 8421 votes

Tura, Aug 27: Chief Minister and National People’s Party chief, Conrad K Sangma along with the NPP led MDA coalition will breathe a huge shy of relief after a victory that will just go down to being one of the most lopsided one in the history of elections for the Tura constituency – South or North.

The NPP leader literally decimated the field and the margin of victory – 8421 will bear testimony to the one-sidedness of the contest. A total of 22,217 voters cast their ballot for the South Tura seat on August 23.

Conrad won the South Tura by-poll securing 13636 votes in the process. His closest rival, Charlotte W Momin of the Congress managed 5235 votes. The two independent candidates, John Leslee K Sangma and Kris Kabul Sangma were left further behind with 2209 and 897 votes respectively. Interestingly, Leslee had managed more votes during the recently concluded elections in February this year.

Conrad was accompanied to the counting centre by his wife along with a huge horde of supporters, most of who were extremely confident of a landslide victory even prior to the counting of the first vote. Their confidence was not misplaced as the 3 rounds of counting only increased the margins after each round.

While counting began at 8 am this morning, it got over by about 10:30 with the CM coming out victorious. The result will also ensure that the CM can continue leading the NPP led coalition (MDA).

After the victory, the NPP, led by the CM took out a rally across the town of Tura as part of the celebration of what is going to be a cherished victory for the NPP – despite the setback at Ranikor.
