COVID-19: Govt requests landlords to defer rent payment of tenants for 1-2 months

Shillong, Apr 11: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Saturday urged landlords to defer rent payment of tenants for 1-2 months in view of the lockdown due to COVID-19 Pandemic.

“We have so many tenants, currently they are unable to pay rent, some of them are daily wage earners, and they don’t have money even for food. So we requested all concerned landlords to kindly defer the rent charges maybe for 1 or 2 months, so that they can also survive. Don’t throw them out if they fail to clear the monthly rent,” he appealed.

He said that in this time of crisis, everyone should take up the responsibility to take care of each other. “The government can’t do it alone,” he said.

Further, he added that the government has already issued a notification to all private business companies, registered establishments and contractors to provide their employees with weekly ration.

“Please make sure ration is available on weekly basis. If they fail, if we receive a complaint or if they don’t comply with the notification, the government will go to the extent of cancelling their registration,” he said.
