SHILLONG, May 6: Garo Hills’ most wanted criminal who escaped from police custody a couple of months ago surrendered before the police on Sunday.
According to police, William A Sangma surrendered before, North Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dr Sacheng Marak at Resubelpara.
The surrender was witnessed by police officials, Church leaders and family members.
Police said that, William was picked up early in the morning from his wife’s residence at Kinangaon Village in Boko, Assam.
He was coerced by family members to surrender who contacted Church leaders and a member of a peace committee in Resubelpara after which police were informed who subsequently took custody of William in their presence.
William, was the former chief of the Achik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) which was a group of hardened criminals involved in various crimes including murder, extortion, kidnappings among other such activities in and around Garo Hills.
It may be mentioned that on March 17, William managed to slip away from police custody with another under trial prisoner, Rongsang Sangma while he was being treated at the Tura Civil Hospital for some ailment.
However, Rongsang, was caught before he could escape the Tura Civil Hospital premises.
The former ANCA man seems to have made it a habit of escaping police custody after he initially ran away from custody in Mendipathar in 2014 to form a criminal gang.
He was once again apprehended in Goalpara district by a joint team of police and army men before being pushed into Meghalaya in the month of March, 2017.
