Cultivated hemp destroyed in SWGH

Tura, Oct 27: The civil administration in a joint operation with police and BSF today destroyed huge quantities of cultivated hemp, near the international border with Bangladesh in the village of Kuligaon under Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills (SWGH).

The operation took place between 3-5 pm yesterday, Oct 26 about 5 kms from the international border with Bangladesh, sources informed.

According to sources, the illegally cultivated hemp was destroyed under the supervision of additional magistrate, SB Sangma with the BSF providing the manpower for the operation under BOP Kalaichar.

During the operation, a total 14 patches of cultivated land of hemp were identified of which only 3 patches have been destroyed. Approx 400 hemp plants (height approx 10 feet of each plant) have been destroyed the 3 patches.

The land on which the same was being illegally cultivated belongs to Durga Hajong, Vishwajeet Hajong and Sujeet Hazong – all residents of the same village.

“About 400 kgs of raw hemp was destroyed on the first day of operation. The rest of the patches could not be destroyed but has been marked and identified by the team,” said a release.

The operation was called off as it was getting dark and required a huge amount of manpower. The operation is expected to continue at a later date. About 1000 kgs of raw help is still to be destroyed.

The cultivated hemp was meant to be smuggled for consumption in the neighbouring country.

“After hard intelligence the BSF managed to prevent the attempt of smuggling of huge quantity of ganja from India to Bangladesh and also exposed nexus of ganja syndicate in the above bordering area,” added a BSF source.
