SHILLONG, Apr 8: Former Congress leader John F Kharshiing who recently resigned from the party last week, on Monday decided to support Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) common candidate and United Democratic Party (UDP) nominee Jemino Mawthoh.
However, Kharshiing who took the opportunity to announce his support to Mawthoh through a press conference which was held at the head quarter of the National People’s Party (NPP) in the city stated that he had not joined any party as yet.
During the press conference Kharshiing was flanked by UDP vice-president Allan Franklin Dkhar and veteran politician Dr DD Lapang of the NPP.
“I express my support seeing the united and positive approach of hope from the regional parties for the people,” Kharshiing said.
According to him, Meghalaya today is a world away from the past.
“There no better evidence of this than the proposal of the regional parties to set their party affiliations aside by unitedly proposing common candidates,” Kharshiing added.
He also said that there is a ground swell of felling at the grass root wanting a change and it has come about in the common candidate of the MDA.
When asked if he had left the Congress because he thinks that the party is a “sinking ship”, Kharshiiing refuting such charges said that the regional parties has placed their agenda (unity) on the table and he had to respond to it.
“I had to respond to this call and move forward setting aside party considerations,” he said.
