SHILLONG, May 7: The East Khasi Hills, police on Monday has cautioned house owners in Shillong while renting their houses to people even as it sought the active cooperation of citizens in fighting drug syndicates operating in the city.
In a statement issued here on Monday, East Khasi Hills police chief, Davis Nestell R Marak said that it has also been observed that many drug traffickers are operating out of rented premises in the city.
“In this regard, house-owners are advised to take necessary precautions while renting out their premises as allowing premises to be used for commission of such offences may make owners liable under Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,” Marak said in his statement.
The East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police also informed that considering seriousness and prevalence of drug related crimes, the police has intensified its operations against drug syndicates operating the the city and has achieved successes in the recent past.
Counting some of the successes, Marak pointed out that on April 27 ANTF staff apprehended one Slander Syiem, (35) of Tyrsad village while he was selling ganja in Paltan Bazar area, and recovered from his possession 1kg 340 grams of ganja.
The next day (April 28) the ANTF alongwith Madanrting police station apprehended one lady, Sapthangi Chhak from Thembasuk, Madanrting and recovered from her possession one plastic box and five golden tobacco tin containing suspected heroin weighing a total weight of 16.50grms and cash worth Rs 16,465.
Further on her leading police arrested another person, Shokhomang from his rented house at Demthring and recovered yellow colour sack from behind his apartment which was suspected to be thrown out by the accused on seeing the cops approaching his house.
From the said sack recovered 13 soap cases containing suspected heroin weighing a total weight of 162 grams.
Meanwhile, on May 4, at around 9:30 pm ANTF alongwith Madanrting police station apprehended one drug peddler, Khualsuamtak, (23) of Lumjingsuk Block-A, and recovered from his possession one soap case containing inside 12.19 grams of suspected heroin.
Later on his leading arrested another person, one Henry Neihsel, (33) from his rented house at Lumjingsuk Block- A, and recovered from his resident 20 soap cases and 32 golden tobacco tin container all containing suspected heroin which weigh around 278 grams and cash of Rs 2,14,400.
