Shillong, Apr 11: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday informed the public that general lockdown in view of the COVID-19 Pandemic could be extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but that there would be relaxation on certain economic activities.
The Chief Minister through a Facebook Live said that the government is hoping to restore certain localised economic activities like Farming, MGNREGA activities, weekly markets, construction work without usage of manpower from other states and more.
“We had proposed to the Government of India that there should be a continuation of lockdown in a national level where movement of individuals from different states should not take place at least for another 2 weeks but at the same time we felt we need to balance out the health concerns and economic livelihood, especially of weaker section of society,” he said.
He also suggested that there could be a relaxation on Inter-District movement, however restrictions on Inter-State and Inter-Border would remain.
Schools, colleges, institutes will continue to remain closed till the end of the month and public gatherings will not be allowed.
On the issue of students and persons stranded outside the state, the Chief Minister said that keeping the health concerns of all citizens in mind, there will not be any provisions for them to return as of yet.
