Tura, April 16: Garo hills pressure groups has filed a police complaint against people involved in illegal gambling in Tura town termed as ‘Bawil Dawil’.
The pressure groups like the GSU, FKJGP, ADE and AYWO in the FIR has demanded stern action against operators of an illegal gambling.
“It is public knowledge that gambling is a regulated market and as per our discreet enquiry no one has obtained any license to conduct such an operation which is in violation of the Meghalaya Prevention of Gambling (amendment) Act 1976,” the NGOs said.
According to the NGOs, Bawil Dawil is in gross violation of the above mentioned state Act and a willful violation of the state laws for personal gain.
“It is not a traditional game and according to the same act, police may arrest without warrant any person found gaming in any public market, fair, street or thoroughfare or any place to which the public have or are permitted to have access,” the NGOs stated.
The NGO further elaborated on the various sections of the same Act under which the game was illegal and the punishment for the same.
The NGOs through the FIR have asked for this form of illegal gambling to be stopped with immediate effect so that it does not mushroom.
“This act of violation poses several important questions but the answer is that it is being sponsored by someone right under the nose of the Tax Department, the police and the administration. If no action is taken the GSU will enquire upon it on its own and take it up as an issue so that the government takes action. We want the person responsible for illegal gambling to be charged for the illegal operation,” they demanded.
