Shillong, Sept 25: Flash flood, landslides and swollen rivers as a result of heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of seven people in Meghalaya and search is on to find five other missing persons.
Meghalaya Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Friday informed five persons, including two cricketers were buried under debris following a landslide at Mawnei Lumparing early morning today.
The bodies of two, Rejiya Ahmed (35 years old) and Saira Ahmed (45 years) have been recovered.
In another incident, a 12-year-old girl passed away in a landslide in East Khasi Hills’ Madanriting area.
Shylla also informed that a vehicle, carrying seven persons submerged due to flash flood in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills. The driver 26-year-old Kenedy Kharsohnoh and an 8-year-old girl drowned to death.
Three persons managed to escape from the flash flood, however, one female passenger is still missing. Fire and Emergency Services managed to rescue another female passenger who clung to the grill of the boundary fencing near the KHADC Office.
Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla shared his condolences with the family of the victims, but added that State Disaster Response Fund norms will have to be followed, before compensation can be declared.
He added that he would be will be writing to the Ministry of Forest and Environment to cut down old trees alongside roads.
Yesterday, it was informed that 2 part-time workers lost their lives in a landslide in Police Reserve. The body of a victim washed away in Wahumkhrah is yet to be recovered.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the government will try its best to restore infrastructure damaged due to landslide and flooding.
Meanwhile, South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai stated that he will be writing to the Chief Minister to request assistance for families affected by the landslide.
