TURA, Oct 31: Three saw mills running illegally in West Garo Hills district were shutdown by the state’s Forest department.
The department was assisted by the police department during the raid.
The raid was carried out by the Forest department officials after the Garo Hils Autonomous District Council (GHADC) forest officials had asked such illegal saw mills to close down.
While one saw mill was shut down in Chibinang, two others were dismantled in Moulakandi.
During the raid officials took back 15 logs while 75 more have been placed under the care of either elders or the village head.
Another 40 logs of high value timber however are still lying in the saw mills as no one was willing to take possession of the logs.
