SHILLONG, Sep 9: A social organization from Garo Hills has sent a memorandum to the Union Minister for railways, Piyush Goyal urging him to introduce moré trains into Mendipathar Railway station.
According to the A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF), for the betterment of the region and a holistic economic development of the region, the government should consider the development of railway infrastructure in this region.
“There must at least be a train connecting Mendipathar railway station to the National capital of India, New Delhi. This will boost the morale of the people of Meghalaya and also stir a sense of connectivity with the national capital,” the AIJIF said in its memorandum to Goyal.
The organization also stated that one freight carrier train should also be allotted to this railway station as it would be the boost required for industrial development of the region.
The AIJIF suggested that the freight carrier would be transporting coal from the dumping yard at Mendipathar railway station and in turn would generate revenue as well as jobs for the youth of this region.
It may be mentioned that Mendipathar railway station is the first and only railway station in Meghalaya, a hilly state.
The train station was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on November 30 2014.
Mendipathar – Guwahati passenger is the only train from the station.
