Shillong, Apr 10: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday ended its campaign for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls. The election is scheduled for April 12.
Addressing a meeting on Saturday for Tura constituency, party candidate, Dr. Pilne A. Sangma, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh expressed his concern over certain individuals spreading propaganda that the party was a Khasi-Jaintia Hills based party.
“I was disappointed when I heard a group of people trying to create differences. A message is being circulated in the Garo Hills region that all candidates of UDP this time are being campaigned by Khasi leaders,” Lyngdoh told the gathering.
The UDP chief said that he was even more disappointed to hear that even the people of Tura most of whom are intellectuals still have time for all these small and petty things.
Lyngdoh said that earlier there was an impression that the UDP has its base only in Khasi and Jaintia Hills and it does not belong to Garo Hills.
“It was very wrong (notion). Let me remind all of you the top leaders from Garo Hills are all from the regional parties. Earlier it was the APHLC then later on came the HPU and now it is UDP. The state’s first Chief Minister Captain Williamson Sangma was one of them,” the UDP president said.
He also said that the district council election in the GHADC this time will be different even as he added that the people of Garo Hills are looking for a change.
“…and who can give that change it is the UDP,” Lyngdoh added.
On the UDP candidate from Tura, he said that she is the fittest person to be a MDC.
Stating that the party is fortunate go have a woman candidate from the Tura seat contesting from the UDP, Lyngdoh said, “She is a doctor and I don’t see why she is not fit to be an MDC because I can see she is fit to be an MLA as well.”
The UDP has fielded 15 candidates for the GHADC elections.
