Shillong, Apr 15: The Congress emerged as the single largest party in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections whose results were announced on Thursday.
The Congress won 12 seats, the National People’s Party 11, three seats were won by independents, two by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Garo National Council (GNC) won one seat.
The prestigious Tura seat was wrested by Bernard Marak of the BJP, while sitting MLA and Nationalist Congress Party legislator Saleng A. Sangma lost the Babelapara seat to NPP’s Rakesh Sangma.
The three independent candidates who won were – Nathawal S Marak from the Wagesik seat, Arbinstone Marak who defeated incumbent Chief Executive Member of GHADC, Dipul Marak from the Rochonpara seat and Aktar Ali won the Zikzak seat in South West Garo Hills district.
Even though the Congress has won the maximum seats but it is still short by three to reach the majority mark.
It is most likely that the NPP might cobble up an alliance with the support of the BJP, GNC and some of the independent MDCs to form the Executive Committee.
