GNC denies it supported Mukul Sangma’s candidature

SHILLONG, Mar 23: A day after it was reported that the Garo National Council (GNC) had pledged its support to Congress candidate, Dr Mukul Sangma for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, the party on Saturday denied any such resolution.

The GNC clarified that it did not support Dr Sangma’s candidature, but rather it was the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) led by its chairman, NIkman Marak.

Augustine Marak, GNC Member of District Council in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) said, “We in the GNC have not supported the Congress in this election. Whatever announcement was made by one of our leaders has been done in an individual capacity.”

Meanwhile, GSMC chairman, Nikman Marak said, “NPP (National People’s Party) has distanced itself from the core issue of the demand for a separate Garoland state. They are now in power but have not once raised the issue.”

It may be mentioned that during the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, one of the major poll plank of the NPP when Late Purno A Sangma contested was separate state of Garoland.

It may be pointed out that Nikman had earlier contested as a GNC candidate from the Baghmara constituency in the 2018 state assembly elections.

According to the GSMC, chairman both the Congress and the NPP are powerful parties, but neither took up the issue of Garoland.

“We (GSMC) are however supporting the Congress as the party has promised to not bring Citizenship Amendment Bill in the country if elected to power,” the chairman said.

“CAB relates to issues of demography, land and the future of the indigenous population and as such we have decided to support the Congress in this election,” Nikman added.
