Tura, May 23: East Garo Hills police on Wednesday recovered huge cache of weapons buried underground during a raid in villages of Dorengkigre and Bowegre this morning which is the 7th such instance of recovery in past two months.
According to details, the weapons recovered include 1 .303 LMG, 2 AK rifles, 1 H&K rifle, 4 SBML barrels, 5 UBGL shells, 5 AK rifles magazines, 2 rockets (RPG), one 9mm magazine, one 9 mm carbine magazine, 1 remote control, 1 signal booster, 12 nos. of IED remote circuit, 30 nos. of AK rifle bullets, 8 pistols, 2 kg of gelatine sticks, 66 nos. of electric detonators and 7 nos. of cleaning rods.
One of the weapons (an AK rifle) is suspected to have been snatched from policemen in an ambush.
The weapons are suspected to be the hidden stash of the now deceased chief of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Sohan D Shira – were recovered this morning by a police search team with help from locals of the area. The area falls under the limits of the Williamnagar PS.
“A few of the villagers showed places where weapons were suspected to have been stashed in the jungle. Some of the weapons were recovered from very difficult places and would not have been possible without the help on the villagers,” said superintendent of police, EGH, Ringrang TG Momin while also thanking the villagers who helped.
