Govt amends Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996 

SHILLONG, Dec 20: The Meghalaya cabinet has made certain amendments in the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996.

According to deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong the amendments in certain clauses of the Act will be brought in the form of an ordinance.

Tynsong said that the cabinet approved the constitution of the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to be headed by the Principal Secretary, Labour Department.

He said that this is as per the direction of the Supreme Court.

The cabinet has also approved the insertion of few important clauses of the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Rules, 2008. The clauses relates to maternity benefits.

“The original Rule was silent on male workers, but now male workers should be entitled (to get maternity benefits) if wife is not a member of construction workers,” Tynsong said.

The deputy chief minister also said that the cabinet on Thursday approved one time grant of Rs 5000 to registered construction workers. Earlier, the government used to give Rs 5000 as loan to construction workers.

“This one time grant is for procurement of tools by the workers,” Tynsong added.

He also said that children of such construction workers will be entitled to stipends which has been fixed at various rate for different classes.

Also, the cabinet decided to insert another clause of one time grant for books and uniforms.

Tynsong said that there are 42,000 to 43,000 construction workers registered with the government.
