High Court imposes Rs 2 lakh fine on Editor, Publisher

SHILLONG, Mar 8: The Meghalaya High Court today imposed a fine of Rs two lakh each on the Editor and Publisher of Shillong Times in a contempt proceeding case.

The Court also said that the fine should be deposited with the Registry within a week and then to be deposited in the welfare fund of the Meghalaya High Court.

“We also further direct that in default of payment, both the contemnors will have to undergo six months simple imprisonment and the paper so called Shillong Times will automatically come to an end (banned),” the High Court said.

The division bench of the High Court while delivering the judgment stated that in exercise of the power vested on them by Article 215 of the Constitution of India, both the contemnors are to sit in the corner of the court room till the rising of the court today.

The contempt proceedings were initiated on the basis of the rep[ort published in the newspaper, dated December 6, 2018 and December10, 2018, under the caption “When Judges judge for themselves”.
