HSPDP suggests ECI to conduct influence- free election

SHILLONG, Aug 28: The Hill State people’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) participated in the meeting of all recognised national and state political parties.

On Monday, Chief Election Commission OP Rawat and other senior officials of the Election Commission held a meeting with all national and recognized regional political parties on Monday in New Delhi to discuss issues related to elections procedures.

The HSPDP was represented by its two legislators in the Meghalaya Assembly, Renikton L Tongkhar and Samlin Malgniang.

The HSPDP the only recognised regional political party from Meghalaya suggested some measures to bring about free, fair and transparent elections in the country.

Among other things the HSPDP suggested the ECI to conduct an influence- free election.

“As the people have a free right /will to vote, they should not be influence by the social media, by the win-ability of the party , money power and false promises,” the HSPDP said.

The HSPDP added that more importantly, they pleaded that the Election Commission of India be free from any influences, interruption by any external factors, be it a ruling government or a ruling party, while conducting the election process.

The party also suggested that there should be an Election Expenditure Regulation and recommended for ceiling of election expenditure by political parties.

“We propose that the political party can spend only 25 percent of the expenditure allowed for each candidate. We also proposed the ceiling of political parties fund accumulation. Funds may be raised only up-to the extent that party may be required to run the party affairs because having surplus fund will lead to temptation to spend illegally during the election,” the party said.

The HSPDP also said that it encourages women participation in the electoral process and suggested the commission “to recognized and award” political parties who put maximum women candidates in any specific election.

It also suggested filling of election expenditure reports on time.

“The responsibility to file the report of election expenditure may be fixed to the leaders who lead the party during the election so that they know the accurate details of the expenditure,” the HSPDP said.
