Shillong, May 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on Thursday reviewed the newly opened Corona Care Centre at IIM Umsawli. The centre has 258 rooms spread over 4 blocks which has 4 floors each.
The Chief Minister informed that every room is a single seater with attached washrooms. He also said that there will be floor segregation for people who test positive for COVID-19 and staff members.
He thanked IIM for their support and said, “This has only been possible with the support of the IIM, the place given by them to the state government, which we managed to renovate within one month. All the departments PHE, MeECL, PWD, Education and Health Department came together to put up this centre.”
Further, he informed that around 70 staff members are already in the centre. “This is the centre where we will be putting cases if they come up which are mostly in Category A and B which are mild cases. This is the biggest one in the state,” he said.
It was also informed that all Corona Care Centres are manned by doctors, nurses and support staff 24X7 in a 3-shift pattern. A police unit has also been stationed for 24 hours duty.
IIM Umsawli was reportedly identified as a Corona Care Centre on April 2020. The government informed that the hostel block didn’t have power connectivity, internal electrical wiring, internal bathroom fittings, geysers, water availability, drainage, sewerage and more when it was identified as a centre.
Additional works including setting up of poles from power substation to IIM Shillong, construction of septic tank, making water treatment plant functional, internal electrical wiring in Hostel Blocks and Admin Block, rectification of entire sewage and drainage system, installation of Wi-Fi etc. were undertaken by the state government.
