Import of pigs into Meghalaya banned

SHILLONG, Apr 27: The Meghalaya government on Monday has banned the import of pigs in to the state. 

The notification passed the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, states, “Transportation of pigs from other states into Meghalaya is hereby stopped until further order,” Principal Secretary, Dr. Shakil Ahammed said. 

It may be mentioned that unusual mortality of pigs has been reported from various districts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. 

Assam has temporarily banned the sale of pork in the state. 

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department has also directed all government pig farms, private pig farms and pig farmers should take adequate measures for strict hygiene and bio-security such as disinfection of the farms, equipments and restricting entry of any outside person into pig farms. 

“Signs of high fever in pigs and any abnormal mortality of pigs should be brought to the notice of the District or Sub Divisional Animal Husbandry & Veterinary,” Dr Ahammed said.
