SHILLONG, Feb 16: Meghalaya police has been able to apprehend a gang of inter state robbers which has been spreading terror in the West Garo Hills and South West Garo hills district of the state.
Police also suspects that the gang also has members from Bangladesh.
According to police the gang had been notoriously carrying on dacoities,robberies for many years, generally in areas of Meghalaya, including West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts especially along villages in proximity to international border.
“Their modus operandi has been typical, moving in group of 15-20, quite ambulatory using vehicle for movement, wearing mask, no any sophisticated weapon/arms but using simple techniques and equipments such as crowbar etc mostly during late night hours between 12 midnight to 2 am,” police said.
In the year 2019, during month of January this gang had resorted robberies in some Churches across Garo Hills, in connection with which some members of this gang were arrested, subsequent to which most of the gang members had either absconded or remained dormant.
In January 2020, they again started robberies in three places of South West Garo Hills (2) and West Garo Hillls (1).
In connection with this massive search operations were started by an inter-district special team, subsequent to which they went absconding again.
“With persistent relentless efforts and perseverance, in the intervening night of 15th-16th February 2020, in series of operations the gang members alongwith incriminating evidences were arrested from various places spreading across interstate border of Assam-Meghalaya,” police said.
Initially the police arrested five members of the gang which includes – Jamaluddin, (46) kingpin and master mind of the gang, Surat Jamal, main gang member, Gazibur Rehman, (22) of Belbari Under Phulbari police station, Ainal Hoque,
and Romesh Ali Mondol of Ksolissamari. From his possession a stolen modified Bolero Pick up used for robbery/dacoity was also recovered.
Later three more members of the gang has been arrested. However there names could not be ascertained.
During operations police also recovered one stolen bike with East Khasi Hills registration, used for robbery/dacoity.
The West Garo Hills police team, responsible for cracking this criminal gang comprises of Additional Superintendent of Police in charge SDPO(D), two IPS probationers, co-ordinated by Additional Superintendent of Police Tura and assisted by Cyber Crime Investigation Center Tura, Officers and personnel of Hallidayganj police station.
