SHILLONG, Jun 19: Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi, the lone National People’s Party (NPP) Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya said that he will take up the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament.
Kharlukhi said that since the Meghalaya Assembly had passed a resolution to exempt the State from the Act.
“As a representative representing the MDA, I have to follow it up with Delhi. As per resolution that CAA be exempted from Meghalaya,” he said.
Thanking all those who voted in his favour, he said that he will try his level best to serve the people of the State in whatever capacity he can.
Kharlukhi in 1986, entered electoral politics by joining the then Hill People’s Union and served as a general secretary of the party’s youth wing.
Kharlukhi, was one of the architects in the formation of the Meghalaya Students’ Union.
He was also a leading member of the North East Region Students’ Union formed in 1981.
Born and brought up in Jowai, West Jaiñtia Hills, Kharlukhi has a master of philosophy in History, but a doctorate in philosophy in Political Science.
He was also a close associate of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma.
When Sangma was with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Kharlukhi had served as the state president of the party from 2007-2012.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister and National President of the NPP, Conrad K Sangma said that with his experience and knowledge that he has he will be able to bring a lot enrichments and lots of issues that are important to the State in the Parliament.
“…and I am sure that he will give a strong voice to the issue related to Meghalaya bad North East in the Parliament,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister also thanked the MDA members who vote in favour of Kharlukhi.
