Kohli: BJP is committed to the MDA coalition

SHILLONG, Aug 24: BJP general secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Nalin Kohli on Friday said that Conrad Kongkal Sangma is the chief minister and will be even when the elections are over also.

It may be mentioned that, Conrad is seeking election as an MLA, for which the by-poll was held on August 23. Presently, the Chief Minister is still a Lok Sabha MP from Tura constituency.

Kohli also said that the BJP is committed to the ruling coalition in the state.

“I am sure the government is working for its agenda and we are a participant in the government. This is an NPP led coalition govt. Our minister is there AL Hek. We have no reason to believe that the government is not working on a positive agenda for the development of Meghalaya,” Kohli said after an event held to pay homage to former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The BJP general secretary in charge of the state also said that his party is committed to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition which the saffron party is part of.

Kohli also said that the BJP expects the government must complete its tenure and must deliver to the people its promises and its agenda of development.

“That is the only reason why the government is formed,” he said.

When asked on the assurance of the BJP that if it is in power, coal issue will resolve within 6 to 8 months, Kohli said that the final decision on policies and decision to be taken is taken by the chief minister and his cabinet.

“We are participant there we don’t drive this government. We respect the coalition dharma after all we were the first ones as a party to have the biggest coalition in the party under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and ensure a stable coalition and that is how coalition politics evolves in this country,” he added.

The BJP leader said that in coalition dharma, it recognizes the role of each party has to play for the coalition to succeed.

“Here the people of Meghalaya broadly gave the NPP the biggest chunk of seats and chance to lead and with the support of the others there is a common agenda,” Kohli said.

HE also said that the BJP as any political party will campaign and will strive to form a government on its own strength and that is the role every political party aspires.

According to Kohli when the BJP got two seats, and it is part of the coalition and it is a coalition dharma led by the NPP and therefore what would be the policies and the priorities what should be the agenda that will be decided by the coalition government headed by the party which is the single largest.

Meanwhile, on Vajpayee, he said that he was a person who was loved across all party lines.

Kohli said that Vajpayee steered India through a very important period of India where there was expansion of infrastructure of India.

The BJP leader saiod that it was during the tenure of late Vajpayee there was a turn around in India’s relationship with many countries.

“How we were today with United States of America…all of that happened during that period,” he said.

“When Atal passed away it was a lost of one of the great sons of India and am sure you have seen the kind of homage and respect he got across the country,” he said.

Kohli also said that the idea of taking his ashes to different states across the country is an opportunity for those who loved him and have affection for him wish to pay their respects now that he is no longer alive.

He also hit out at Karuna Shukla , the niece of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accusing her that she was politicising his death.

The BJP accusing Shukla for politicising his death came a day after Shukla had accused the ruling BJP for politicising the former prime minister’s death for electoral gains in 2019 polls by carrying the ashes across India.

“She (Shukla) is with the Congress and had also contested elections on a Congress ticket. She is trying to politicize it (Vajpayee’s death). It is unfortunate that someone is trying to politicize it. We believe this entire is far beyond and above politics,” Kohli said.
