KSU demands process similar to NRC in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Aug 31: After the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked for a census similar to the NRC to weed out infiltrators from Meghalaya.

On Saturday, the KSU carried out checking of infiltrators in the wake of the the publication of NRC list in Assam.

“We urge the state government to take steps in securing the Assam – Meghalaya border so that infiltrators cannot enter the state,” KSU general secretary Donald Thabah said.

This demand came after 19 lakh persons in Assam were included in the NRC.

The students’ body fear that those who were not included in the list may flee Assam and enter the state.

“Due to the absence of any mechanism to identify infiltrators from the genuine residents these people may enter the state,” Thabah said.

Meghalaya shares around 900 km long boundary with Assam.

Due to the delay in implementing the entry/exit points in the state the KSU has suggested the state government that it should set up temporary check gates in strategic locations in the state and also beef up security in such infiltration check gates.

The KSU has also urged the dorbar shnongs, seng samla and village defence party to be alert and so that non indigenous people cannot resides in the various villages and localities.

“Even if these people have EPIC but if they are not in the NRC list it means that the EPIC won’t be of any use,” the KSU general secretary said.
