Lanong hints of ‘instability’ if there is no consensus on common candidate

SHILLONG, Oct 16: United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Bindo M Lanong on Tuesday urged the National People’s Party (NPP) to take the state government as their priority.

Lanong was referring to the stability of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in case there is no consensus among the coalition partners especially the NPP of having a common candidate for the Shillong seat for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

When specifically asked if the UDP working president was hinting that there may be instability if there is no consensus for the candidate of the UDP, Lanong said, “It may bring instability. But I or Jemino (Mawthoh) will not try to (bring instability).”

The UDP working president said that if the NPP insists on putting up its own candidate for the Shillong seat then the regional part may be compelled to have its own man for the Tura, Lok Sabha seat.

The veteran regional party leader also said that it will look good if the regional parties of the state who are part of the government have an understanding with the NPP so that the coalition government lasts.

He also said that by having a consensus for a common candidate will prove to the world that the coalition partners in the MDA are together.

Earlier, Lanong informed media persons that the Central Election Committee of the UDP decided that it will put up a candidate from the Shillong seat while for the Tura Lok Sabha, it will leave for the NPP.

He also informed that two former MLAs Paul Lyngdoh and Jemino Mawthoh had expressed their willingness to contest the MP elections slated for 2019. Lanong also informed that if things go smoothly the MP candidate from the party will be announced on October 31.
