Malngiang: Need for strong drug policy

SHILLONG, Aug 19: Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB), Lambor Malngiang has called for the need to have a strong drug policy to contain the drug menace in the state.

Speaking to reporters after he convened a meeting with government departments, the police and dorbar shnong of the various localities of Shillong city, Malngiang informed that the drug policy has been hanging fire since 2012.

“We need to take into consideration that there is a need for a strong policy,” he said even as he added that another meeting will be held with the Social Welfare Department to discuss on the issue.

Malngiang said that the process to bring about the state’s drug policy is underway and the state’s social welfare department has been entrusted to solicit suggestions to strengthen the policy.

On the need to establish a rehabilitation centre with modern facilities for the benefit of those who want to come out of their addiction, Malngiang said that there is a need of one such centre in Shillong probably owned by the government.

“This would be for those who want to come out of their addiction but who can’t afford to go to private rehab centres,” the Planning Board Chairman said.

Presently, there are no government run rehabilitation centres in the state.
