Man dies while illegally extracting coal

SHILLONG, May 16: Police on Wednesday have identified the dead body which was found from a vehicle in Diengpasoh, East Khasi Hills district on the night of May15.

According to police, last night, at about 9:15 pm, a Tourist Sumo bearing number ML 04- A 8561, fled from the police check post at Diengpasoh on the bye pass route.

Checking was going on after arrests of NSCN (K) cadres earlier.

Police went after the vehicle and found the vehicle abandoned ahead.

When they checked the vehicle they found a dead man inside.

Initially police thought the man was murdered but after they apprehended the four persons who fled, it was revealed that the man was being taken to Assam from East Jaintia Hills.

The actual cause of his death was that he died in the coal mines near Myndihati where he was working along with others.

This despite the fact that the National Greeen Tribunal (NGT) had banned the extraction of coal in Meghalaya.

“This just proves that illegal mining in the State is being carried out rampantly in Meghalaya and migrant labourers are being brought and at risk, are working in these mines,” Agnes Kharshiing of the Civil Society Women Organisation said.

His colleagues did not inform local police as the matter of illegal coal mining would come up.

The name of the deceased is Naresh Rajbongshi and it seems he was crushed in a rat hole mine.

Seems the Sordar( name they give in coal mines to manager) had arranged for them to go to Assam for last rites of the man and it seems one among the detained is relative/ brother of the deceased.

Post Mortem was conducted in Civil Hospital Shillong on Wednesday.
