Meghalaya government shy away from speaking to media after cabinet meet

Shillong, Jun 18: In a break from convention the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Friday failed to conduct its customary press briefing after the Cabinet meeting.

Reporters of various print and electronic media began to trickle into the Secretariat since the Cabinet meeting began at 12:30 pm.

The meeting ended at around 3 pm and since according to one of the Cabinet Ministers, they were hungry they broke for lunch and decided to meet again at 5 pm for the daily review on the Covid-19 situation.

When the review meeting started at 5 pm journalists were eagerly waiting at the Yojana Bhavan for some ministers to brief them on the Cabinet decisions.

But when Health Minister, A. L. Hek came at around 6 pm he only gave details of the review meet on Covid-19 situation much to the disappointment of the exhausted journalists.

Later, the office of the Chief Minister emailed, the decisions of the Cabinet, thereby depriving the media to seek clarifications on various issues.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong refused to speak to the media and said that they can asked the Chief Minister.

What’s interesting was that on Thursday afternoon, the media were informed that a Cabinet meeting was scheduled for Friday.

“Kindly make it convenient to cover the press briefing thereafter,” the Chief Minister’s Office had stated.

What made the government to give the press briefing a miss only the Cabinet Ministers can answer.
