Shillong, May 2: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, on Saturday, informed that the government has banned inter-district movement of pigs in view of the highly contagious African swine fever.
The state has already stopped importing pigs from outside the state. Over 2000 pigs have died due to the disease in Assam and several cases have been reported in Arunachal Pradesh.
Addressing a press conference, Tynsong reiterated that there have been no cases of African Swine Fever in the state. “Everything is under control,” he said.
The Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has advised people to cook pork properly before consumption. However, according to World Organisation for Animal Health, the disease does not spread from animals to humans.
There is no vaccine currently available for the disease.
