SHILLONG, Aug 20: The Special Cell of West Jaintia Hill police arrested two top functionaries of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) on the wee hours of Monday.
According to West Jaintia Hills, Superintendent of Police (SP), Vivek Syiem, after receiving intelligence inputs that two ZUF cadres were travelling in a night super bus from Silchar towards Guwahati, a check point was put up a Phramer and during checking of a bus (B/R No. AS 01 JC – 1300) at around 2:30 am, the two top ZUF functionaries Raitu Chawang (66) @ Raitu chairman of ZUF and Gengchung Pou Namthuiyang (43) @ Dangmei, information secretary of ZUF were apprehended.
From their possession, four mobile phones were seized.
According to Syiem during preliminary enquiry, the two cadres admitted that they are ZUF cadres and were planning to go to Guwahati.
The Special Cell of West Jaintia Hills police are investigating the purpose of their visit to Guwahati.
The ZUF is a militant outfit active in Nagaland and Manipur. The ZUF has its own army wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force with its own chief.
Meanwhile, the West Jaintia Hills SP informed that the dou has been under section 41 CrPC at the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, West Jaintia Hills for judicial remand as they are wanted in Tamenglong district of Manipur for five cases under the arms act.
Moreover, Syiem also said that the SP of Tamenglong District in Manipur is sending a team to take custody of the accused persons.
