Meghalaya police officers involved in coal business

Shillong, Dec. 23: Injured social activists Agnes Kharshiing, said that she was attacked because she was fighting against the detention of illegal transportation of coal in the state.

Kharshiing said that the attack on her was a conspiracy by “someone” to get her.

The activist said that most of the police officers in the state do not dare to speak out against illegal mining in the state.

On Saturday, Kharshiing who is recovering from the injuries she received after being attacked in East Jaintia Hills district on November 8 said that many good police officers have been shunted out.

She however did not deny the fact that there are trustworthy officers in the force.

“I have faith only on a few officers, but most are scared to speak out,” Kharshiing said.

She also alleged that some of the police officers are themselves involved in the coal business.

Kharshiing also said that being the president of the Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) does not mean that she has to take up issues pertaining to women only.

Kharshiing pointed out that in Jaintia Hills many residents do not get potable water. “

Many poor people want to speak out but they don’t dare,” she said.

Kharshiing also said that as a human rights defender she does not have to stick only to women related issues.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government has written to the Coal India seeking their special pumps (high-power submersible pumps) to aid the rescue of the 15 miners in Lumthari area of East Jaintia Hills district.

She also expresed concern over the state governemnt not being able to arrtestthe culprits who were involved in the attack.

“If they were ordinary peope they would have ben arrested,” Kharshiing said.

She also said that the attack on her was an attack on others who would like to fight against injustice.
