The man – Ahidul Islam (35) of Nandichar village under Mahendraganj police station was found on Friday behind the JNV School.

However, the rifle that he snatched from the police on Sunday night has not been recovered yet.

The district’s police chief, Rithuraj Ravi informed, “He claims to have thrown the gun into the flood waters.”

Ravi informed that the area Islam was hiding was sparsely populated which allowed him to stay hidden for so long.

It may be mentioned that after rumours of the mentally unstable man being shot at by police on Sunday night, triggered mayhem in Mahendraganj police station on Monday morning.

Islam on Sunday night tried to attack the public with a dao at Nadichar.

Police had rushed to the area to prevent Islam from inflicting any casualty to the public.

In the process to catch hold of the person, a policeman dropped his rifle and while trying to recover it fell into a river. When Islam grabbed the rifle and started to run, the police resorted to blank firing to deter Islam from carrying the rifle and from fleeing.
