Mine Tragedy:Rescuers struggling to retrieve second body

SHILLONG, Jan 27: Rescuers at an illegal rat-hole mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district are trying to retrieve the body of a second miner which was detected on January 26.

According to spokesperson of the rescue operation, R Susngi, the Indian navy divers are trying to retrieve the second dead body detected from the rat hole to the main shaft.

“…but due to many obstacles inside the rat hole like materials , exhaust pipes , used by miners  and turbidity the retrieval has become very difficult and efforts is still going on,” Susngi said on Sunday evening.

“On January 26, the Indian Navy Divers have located a second body at 0318 hrs today, around 280 feet from the main shaft a long, lonely haul during an operation carried out throughout night,” East Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner, FM Dopth had informed on Saturday.

Dopth had also informed that the first body which was identified as that of Amir Hussain of Chirang district, Assam was handed over on Saturday morning after completion of formalities.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, The Coal India Limited pumped out the water from two old shafts from Saturday evening till Sunday 5 pm and after a total of 34 hours the total discharge of water is 45, 90, 000 litres.

However, the due to some mechanical problem the Pune based KSB Company pump was stopped for a while and the pumping will continue soon after repairing is done.

Moreover, the Kirloskar Brother Limited  continued with installation of a platform in one of the old shaft and pumping of water by them is expected at the earliest, Susngi informed.
