Mukul denies reports of Congress MLAs joining other parties

SHILLONG, Jul 2: State opposition leader, Dr Mukul Sangma, blamed the state government for recent reports that some members of the Congress on the verge of joining other parties.

The opposition leader claimed that the Congress party in the state was intact.

“The government is shaky. Therefore it is spreading rumours just to prevent the government from falling,” Dr Sangma told section of reporters on Tuesday.

Dr Sangma, however pointed out that instead some leaders from various political parties wants to join the Congress.

There were reports that a few Congress MLAs have contacted the United Democratic Party (UDP) and were willing to join the regional party.

On Monday, cabinet minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, had claimed that around eight to nine Congress MLAs were in touch to join the National People’s Party.

However, dismissing such reports, Dr Sangma said, “In CLP there is no adventurism and we are committed to work as a united opposition.”

Reiterating that the Congress was collectively committed as a responsible opposition, Dr Sangma said, “We are active and will take up issue and will play the role of opposition.”

The opposition leader also said that political leaders from various politicalparties are in fact inclined to join the Congress.

Dr Sangma pointed out that earlier this year before the Lok Sabha polls many joined the Congress in Garo Hills and the thumping win in the Shillong Parliamentary seat shows how much the party is gaining strength in Khasi-Jaintia hills.
