Shillong, Apr 16: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) poll results have proved that Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma is still a force to reckon with, a Minister of the ruling coalition said.
This statement came from state cabinet minister and an MLA of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Lahkmen Rymbui.
Stating that the polls results in GHADC wherein the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 12 MDCs is a lesson for the Congress.
Often reports surface that the Congress MLAs want a change of CLP leader.
“This is a lesson for the Congress because the party (members) within themselves thought that Dr. Mukul is gone and we can do away with him,” Rymbui said.
He said that from this (GHADC results) the Congress should realise that Dr. Mukul Sangma still has weight and that they cannot just throw him out of the party.
It may be mentioned that Rymbui in 2008 won on a Congress ticket.
Meanwhile, he also said that the electorates of Garo Hills always voted for a leader unlike the citizens of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
Rymbui also said that the mindset of the Garo voters was more towards national parties.
However, Rymbui stated that as a UDP legislator he was satisfied that in this GHADC election in many of the constituencies the party could secure a substantial number of votes.
