Mukul Sangma meets Governor, discusses ILP, MRSSA

Shillong, Dec 10: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya today met Governor, Satya Pal Malik to discuss Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Governor, leader of opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma informed that during the course of interaction with Malik, told him that there was need to implement ILP in Meghalaya after the Parliament passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), in December 2019.

The opposition leader also told the Governor that the Meghalaya Assembly on December 19 last year adopted a unanimous resolution to urge upon Government of India to include Meghalaya under the purview of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and implement ILP.

“Now it is pending, there was an assurance from the state government and chief minister himself that they would pursue aggressively and prevail upon the government of India to implement ILP,” Dr. Sangma said.

He said that the demand for ILP is based on the genuine apprehension of the people post enactment of CAA and keeping in mind the importance of the state which has a long international border with Bangladesh and inter-state border with Assam.

On the issue of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, Dr. Sangma told the Governor that if the amendment bill is delayed the opposition Congress subscribed to the idea of recalling it and ensure that Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 in its original form be implemented immediately.

“This will ensure that the concerns of the people are to an extent addressed by operationalisation of this Act,” the Leader of Opposition said.

Dr. Sangma also said that he will be writing to the Chief Minister to request to recall the Amendment Bill and ensure that the MRSSA 2016 is operationalised in its original form without delay.
