Tura, Feb 8: Despite repeated complaints of the presence of illegal stone quarries under Kharkutta Block in North Garo Hills, no officer of the district has paid a visit to the area despite assurances of an inquiry into the issue by the deputy commissioner.
Earlier members of Achik Youth Council (AYC) had informed the DC of some miscreants opening up illegal stone quarries, one of which even used dynamite without any form of environmental clearances.
“An inquiry into the matter was to be done immediately after the complaint by the BDO of Kharkutta. However despite more than 3 weeks having passed, no officer has come and the illegal stone quarries have been operating without any form of restrictions. In fact one of the quarries was even planning on using blasting materials the past week,” said AYC general secretary, Maxbirth Momin.
The 4 quarries allegedly belong to Withiling Sangma, Nanilstone Momin, Prejesh Momin and Temolin Sangma. The quarry belonging to Withiling Sangma has allegedly been using dynamite to blast stones with all of them being situated in the village of Balapara.
The NGO has questioned the inaction to known illegal works that has put the local eco-system at risk.
“Why this silence and why are they overlooking the matter. Why can’t they not even check whether these quarries have valid papers or not and shut them down immediately. This does not make sense. When something illegal is taking place why are they hesitant in acting against it,” asked Maxbirth.
Upon being contacted on the matter, the deputy commissioner stated that he would speak to his officer for an update into the matter.
