SHILLONG, Jun 5: A day after the state government set up a High Level Committee (HLC), to find a permanent solution to the long pending issue of relocation of residents of Them ïew Mawlong (Harijan colony), the opposition Congress demanded the setting up of a judicial inquiry to study the issue.
Speaking to reporter after the Congress Legislature Party meeting today, leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma said that Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government failed to maintain peace in the state.
According to Dr Sangma, the judicial inquiry will give you a very transparent and complete picture about the situation, and ways and means of handling it.
The former chief minister claimed that the previous Congress government not only restored peace in the earlier years but also managed to sustain it until the installation of the present government.
“It is a sad thing that not even completing three months, they have (MDA) messed up everything,” Dr Sangma said.
According to him, due to the current situation in the capital city the name and fame of the state which was built over the years as a top tourist destination, has been adversely affected.
He also said that it was the responsibility of the state government to maintain peace.
Meanwhile, reacting to former MLA and UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh’s statement that it was the failure of the Congress to solve the issue at Them ïew Mawlong in the past, Dr Sangma taking a jibe at him said, “Paul Lyngdoh has gone out of circulation. He would like to attract and draw people’s attention because he is not in the reckoning, and that’s his usual style.”
Opposition chief whip, Process T Sawkmie added, “He is a failed politician.”
