SHILLONG, Oct 30: Leader of the Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said that Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma was detached from his cabinet ministers.
According to Dr Sangma there is a disconnect between Conrad and his cabinet when the former says that he is yet to be briefed and would discuss first with the Director General of Police on the surrender of former HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
Dr Sangma said, “Either the Chief Minister was in the dark (of Thangkhiew’s surrender), or some people have assumed power upon themselves.”
Earlier, Dr Sangma had questioned the authority of deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong of speaking to the former HNLC general secretary to convince him to come overground.
Stating that the Congress had asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to make its clear stand on the procedures followed on the surrender of Thangkhiew, Dr Sangma asked the whereabout of the weapons when he retired from the outfit.
He said, “When they have no clarity, it means that they have not followed the laid down procedures. Therefore we want peace to sustain, and it must be done correctly.”
When asked why the previous Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government under his leadership did not engaged with the HNLC when they had offer for talks, Dr Sangma said that the Meghalaya government had communicated this offer of the HNLC to the centre but it ruled that since the state is dealing with a banned outfit, the state government on its own cannot engage in talks.
