Congress condemns intrusion of Assam into Iongkhuli, assault on MDC

Shillong, Jul 27: Congress legislator and spokesperson, Zenith M. Sangma has condemned the intrusion by Assam police into Meghalaya territory and also the manhandling of MDC, Charles Marngar.

“We condemn this illegal act of Assam Police where they manhandled our elected MDC, Charles Magnar in the strongest word we can ever pronounce,” Sangma said.

The Congress spokesperson also thanked the local people for being whistle blowers and defending fearlessly by opposing the Assam Police from removing the electric poles erected by MeECL and claiming the portion of land to be part of Assam.

He pointed out that there are 12 areas of differences along the Meghalaya – Assam border.

“Apart from the recorded 12 areas of difference, this is a fresh dispute area.  I had cautioned the government last week. Iongkhuli is an integral part of Meghalaya. How can police force of Assam trespass? Is the Government sleeping so long or is it because of the weak leadership or the present government does not bother for all these. We want replies,” Sangma said.

He also said that when local people contacted Marngar at around 11:30 am on Monday, he rushed immediately and reached the spot around 1:45 pm.

“But the SP, Ri-Bhoi, although informed at 11:30 am, he reached after 4 pm only,” Sangma said.

The Congress spokesperson also said that after getting information of the incident, the MDC informed the Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong but there was no action or further information and when Marngar contacted him again his call was not attended to.

“This is the state of affairs in our state under the present government; we don’t know what is their priority?” Sangma said.
