SHILLONG, Mar 18: Sitting Shillong MP, and Congress candidate from the Shillong parliamentary seat, Vincent H Pala said that although National People’s Party (NPP) national president, and state Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, said that the party will not contest all the 25 seats from the northeast but in Shillong the party is not putting up a candidate.
“It is surprising despite NPP headquarter being in Shillong, they are not putting up a candidate here. This shows the limitations of the party and are ready to compromise,” Pala a two-time MP from Shillong told newsmen on Monday.
It may be mentioned that the NPP has decided to support the candidature of its ally in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) – United Democratic Party (UDP). The UDP has set up former legislator Jemino Mawthoh.
The Congress MP from Shillong also stated that he was 100 percent sure that whether it is the NPP or the UDP they are being remotely control by the BJP.
According to him, the agenda of the BJP is to defeat Vincent Pala.
“Whether it is UDP or NPP, the message they are spreading is that the Congress should lose..The reason for BJP contesting the election was to ensure that the Congress does not eat up all the non-tribal vote. But 70 percent to 80 percent electorates would vote for the Congress,” Pala claimed.
He also said that the claim of the MDA to set up a common candidate was nothing without a common symbol.
“How can you say it is a common candidate when the expenditure incurred by the candidate will be on UDP. Whatever vote share will be gathered will be given to the UDP.The claimed of a common candidate does not arise,” Pala added.
