Shillong, Mar 7: The People’s Democratic Party (PDF) has expressed its surprise that Highlander Kharmalki is seeking a Congress ticket for the Mawryngkneng Assembly by-poll.
It may be mentioned that Kharmalki contested from the PDF in 2018 and secured second position.
“We cannot stop a person from asking for a party ticket but on Monday the PDF will sit to discuss the bye-election in Mawryngkneng,” PDF legislator and Cabinet Minister Hamletson Dohling said.
The bye-election has been necessitated after the demise of sitting MLA, David A. Nongrum.
According to him, the party did not have any inkling that Kharmalki wanted a Congress ticket, but they saw it in the media reports.
The Mawryngkneng Block Congress Committee (MBCC) president, Banshanlang Lawai said that they cannot comment anything on the issue and has left it to the Election Committee of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.
“They will decide whom they will give the ticket. We leave it to the wisdom of the Election Committee,” he said.
Lawai also said that the MBCC has left it to the wisdom of Charles Pyngrope the father of Late Nongrum, Charles Pyngrope.
“We believe that Charles Pyngrope will take the best decision which will satisfy all,” Lawai said.
