Shillong, Mar 31: Meghalaya Police Department on Tuesday appealed to citizens of the state to follow social distancing norms and other advisories issued by the state government during the nation-wide lockdown due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
According to a statement, the department revealed that they found many citizens not acting responsibly and conscientiously in this time of crisis and continue to exhibit disregard for the norms laid down.
“Under the relevant sections of law, forwarding and sharing of fake news and rumors is a crime,” the statement read, adding that strict action will be taken against those perpetuating these violations.
Interestingly, the department has also barred circulation of April fool messages, pranks or jokes in regards to COVID-19 and the lockdown and curfew promulgated. “It will be stringently dealt with in accordance with provisions of law,” the statement read.
