Shillong, Nov 19: A sit-in demonstration to protest against non-implementation of Inner Line Permit, Citizenship Amendment Act, slow progress of Entry/Exit points, and non-inclusion of Khasi & Garo Language to the 8th schedule was held by pressure groups across the state.
The demonstration was organized by KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, RBYF, GSU, AYWO and ADE at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills, Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi, Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills, in Shillong and Ichamati in East Khasi Hills.
Leading the protest at Madan Malki, Khasi Students Union president, Lambokstar Marngar accused the central government of insulting the sentiments of the people of Meghalaya by delaying implementation of ILP.
“What is the problem of the central government? ILP has already been granted to Manipur. If central government treat us equally – to safeguard and protect the identity of the indigenous people of the state of Meghalaya, the central government should grant ILP,” he said.
He also reiterated demand to exempt the entire north eastern region from CAA.
Marngar also said that the central government is ‘duty bound’ to include Khasi and Garo Language to the 8th schedule since a resolution was passed by the state government last year.
Meanwhile, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front General Secretary Sadon Blah, said that the gathering was the first step of the NGOs to ‘pressurize the government to implement these long pending agendas.’
