Punjab govt’s delegation wants lasting solution to Harijan Colony issue

SHILLONG, Jun 20: The delegation of the Punjab government which is on a visit to Shillong to meet the Meghalaya government on the issue of Harijan Colony wants a long lasting solution to the issue of the residents living there.

“This thing comes up and again goes into hibernation,
for a year or two. We want it settled once and for all,” Jasbir Singh Dimpa Congress Lok Sabha MP from Punjab and member of the delegation said.

He was speaking to reporters after the delegation’s meeting with Home Minister, James Sangma today morning.

Dimpa hoped that the High Level Committee (HLC) will come up with a solution to the issue.

He also informed that during the meeting with Harijan Panchayat Committee yesterday evening they expressed fear of receiving threat from some organization.

It may be reminded that the banned HNLC had threatened the residents of Harijan Colony.

“We tried to instill confidence in them. The residents have full confidence in the Meghalaya government that one thing is for sure,” Dimpa said.

Meanwhile, Home Minister, Sangma, said that interaction with leaders of the Sikh community, they will in turn try to bring down the feeling of insecurity among the people in Punjab.

“I have requested the delegation whatever they have witnessed here should be passed across to the people of Punjab and also the Sikh community all over the world that the Meghalaya government is trying its best to maintain security of all residents and Sikh community in particular,” Sangma said.

On the issue of the HNLC’s threat, the state Home Minister said that anyone trying to vitiate the atmosphere will be firmly handled with.
